Kristóf Szombati is a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, where he is conducting research on illiberal statecraft in his native Hungary. In 2007 he co-founded the 'Politics Can Be Different' (LMP) party, which he left four years later to pursue a PhD at Central European University. He is author of the 2018 book, The Revolt of the Provinces: Anti-Gypsyism and Right-Wing Politics in Hungary, which analyses the micro-foundations of Hungary’s anti-egalitarian and increasingly authoritarian turn and highlights the role of race and class in making right-wing hegemony.
