The election of US president Donald Trump last year sent shockwaves through Europe. Instead of promoting multilateralism, this new leader decided to veer in a new, nationalistic direction with his message of ‘America First’, his unmasked criticism of allies on and off Twitter, and his refusal to participate in international agreements such as the Paris Climate Accord and the EU-US trade deal TTIP. The transatlantic partnership, central to European foreign policy for the last 70 years, is going through a rather rocky patch. Will it withstand the strain?
