This year the UK and Germany both celebrate 100 years of (some) women getting the vote. Nowadays, women aren’t just posting their ballots – they often run the show. The UK, Germany, New Zealand and Myanmar are among several countries led by a woman, and there are more women in national parliaments than ever before. But achieving complete gender equality in politics is still a long way off. Men, and their interests, are highly overrepresented, while in Europe many women have been disproportionately hit by austerity.
